School Board Elections

The role of the School Board is critical to the success of a school district. It established the vision and direction for the district. It creates and implements the policies that guide the day-to-day operations of our schools. It ensures fiscal accountability and the organizational well-being of the district as a whole. Ultimately, the Board ensures the school district meets the needs of all stakeholders and community members in an ethical, responsible, determined, and sustainable manner. If you are interested in serving on the School Board, we encourage you to submit nomination papers.

School Board elections are set for November 7, 2023. (Iowa Code requires they be held in conjunction with city elections in odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.) In order to be placed on the ballot, you must submit a nomination petition and an affidavit of candidacy. The nomination petition must be signed by at least 47 eligible electors (i.e., U.S. citizens, residents of Iowa, at least 18 years of age) or 1% of the district’s 4,692 registered voters.  The affidavit of candidacy includes your name, office sought, vacancy information, type and date of election, home address, and your affirmation (i.e., eligibility/qualification), signature, and notarization. These nomination papers must be filed with the Board Secretary between Monday, August 28, 2023, and Thursday, September 21, 2023, by 5:00 p.m. Nomination papers may be filed in person or by mail, but must be received by the Board Secretary by the prescribed deadline (postmark dates are irrelevant).

The Iowa Secretary of State has also prepared a Candidate’s Guide to the School Election that addresses common questions and procedures. District personnel would be happy to answer any additional question you may have. Please feel free to contact Board Secretary, Heidi Harris, at (712) 623-6600 ext. 1002.
