Hawkeye Ten Conference Honors Red Oak High School Students
Each year, the principals of the Hawkeye Ten Conference gather together to honor Hawkeye Ten students who exhibit excellence in both academics and character. With over 4000 students attending the conferences’ high schools, it really is a significant achievement to be honored by the conference. There are two types of awards presented at the annual banquet.
The first one is for character. This year’s Character Award was given to Michaela Griffen, Red Oak High School senior. Michaela is the daughter of Paul and Ellen Griffen.
The second one is for academics. This year’s All-Academic Award was given to Lauren Fellers, Red Oak High School Senior. Lauren is the daughter of Lee and Trish Fellers.
The actual banquet held in their honor was on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. The lovely, catered function was held in Atlantic, Iowa, at the Cass County Conference Center. ROHS administrators Jedd Sherman, Principal, and Angie Spangenberg, Activities Director, were in attendance along with two teachers. The teachers were invited by the two honored students as a token of their appreciation. Michaela Griffen invited first year teacher, Kat Gay, Band Instructor. This is quite an honor for Ms. Gay since it is her first year in the classroom.
Lauren Fellers invited Laura Horn, American Literature Teacher and Speech Team Coach. This is the second year in a row that Mrs. Horn has been handpicked by a student, an honor as well, since a teacher is not always invited two years in a row.
